Molecular Imaging and Nuclear Medicine: expectations and requirements

Molecular Imaging has evolved over the past decade as an integrated medical discipline, which incorporates fundamental knowledge from cell biology, molecular biology and diagnostic imaging. The discipline was initially driven by in-situ visualization of target molecules and biological processes [3–6]. More recently, the term ‘Molecular Imaging’ has been used for the noninvasive imaging of molecular, genetic and cellular processes in vivo [7]. Clinical application of Molecular Imaging includes the use of Nuclear Medicine techniques such as Single Photon Emission Computerized Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).
